Postpartum Doula, Certified Birth Doula, Lactation Educator
Heather came to us as a transplant from the Seattle area where she trained as a birth and postpartum doula. After taking cultural competency training with Shafia Monroe she was invited to join a SMC Full Circle Doula training and became a Birth and Postpartum Doula.
Coming back to PDX metro, Heather decided to further her postpartum doula work and attended a CAPPA Postpartum Doula training workshop to prepare her for this focus. She has since served many families, offering non-judgemental support and encouragement for their parenting journeys. She is particularly skilled at allowing clients to find their own path, while supporting with practical ideas and hands on chores that simplify their life with baby.
Currently reunited with her extended family in Scappoose, OR, Heather serves families all over Portland and Vancouver, both during the day and overnights as well. Her background in lactation support comes from her Lactation Educator training with Molly Pessel with Evergreen Lactation through Bastyr University.
Heather’s initial interest was to pursue nutrition counseling, but finding that equity does not exist in the nutrition arena, changed her focus to supporting parents with newborns (who also have nutrition needs!). Breastfeeding nutrition is a passion of hers as well, so by supporting families with food preparation, meal planning, and with a special focus on healing foods after birth, Heather is able to blend her two loves to better support families and give them a healthy and nurtured start. Make sure to have her prepare you her aromatic ginger tea, nutrient rich herbed roasted chicken, or sweet or savory congee while she is caring for your family.
Heather offers birth support as well as postpartum, and attends prenatal visits along with Jen for our birth doula services, especially for our high risk clients expecting twins or higher order multiples, rainbow babies, or any birth that might require more intervention.
Heather is the mother of 2 teens, and has seen the ups and downs of parenting over her years with her kids’ very different personalities. She has been a homeschooling mom as well as navigating the public school system, and has learned so much as a mom along the way. Her compassion goes to parents in challenging situations, and especially to parents welcoming tiny ones who shake things up.
In her free time, Heather is a world traveler! She has volunteered to serve on trips to Mexico and Greece, and travels throughout Europe frequently. She travels often to France and loves the global perspective that traveling offers. She also loves to read non-fiction, and has a casual yoga practice. With a passion for refugees and displaced families, Heather has a heart to serve families in all countries, and strives to make an impact wherever she finds herself.
